Is a Corvette a Supercar?

It’s a question that seems to get asked a lot without many people having an exact answer. To me though, the answer is actually relatively straight forward! However, to answer it we must make a few things absolutely clear because although the answer is straight forward, the question is a little vague – so let me clear this up for you once and for all!

Is a Corvette a supercar? Whether a Corvette is classified as a supercar or not depends on which one you are referring to. The Corvette ZR1 is most definitely a supercar and a very prolific one, at that.

What Makes A Car A Supercar?

Well, a lot of people have a lot of different ideas as to what exactly a supercar is. Fundamentally, in my opinion, the following has to apply to be able to categorize any vehicle as a supercar (also known as an ‘exotic car’):

  • The car must have a limited production run and can not be mass-produced.
  • It must have exceptional performance, compared to a regular car.
  • It will probably have a price tag associated with it that will mean that it is unobtainable to the majority of the population (including me). This may sound a little elitist but if every supercar cost a few hundred dollars then we’d all have one, right?
  • Although this is not always the case, it will most likely be hand-made.
  • It has to be street-legal
  • The looks of the car must make it pop out from others – it needs to turn heads!

Some of the above is maybe more relevant in the past. For instance, now, there are many cars that have exceptional performance. For instance, the Tesla Model S has astonishing performance, getting to 60 mph (in Ludicrous mode) in a little over 2 seconds. But, does that mean it’s a supercar? No (in my opinion).

Why is this? The answer is simply because it doesn’t look like a supercar, that’s why! It’s as easy as that really, as far as I’m concerned. There are so many factors involved in defining a supercar and whether they are justified or not is a subject for another post but this is how people categorize them currently.

What is the fastest Corvette?

The fastest Corvette is currently (as of 2020) the ZR1. It has a top speed of 212 mph. Which will be useful the next time you’re in a hurry to get to the drive-through McDonalds. The speeds these supercars are reaching these days are mind-boggling. It is also totally irrelevant.

How many of us really reach 3-figures that often? Okay, maybe we shouldn’t go down this avenue of discussion! But you get my point, what’s more fun than the top speed is how quick it gets up to 60 mph – which is just 2.85 seconds! Which is about the same time it took you to read this last sentence!

There’s a good reason why it has such high performance. The Corvette ZR1 is powered by a 6.2 liter V8 that’s capable of producing 755 horses. It’s an extremely capable lump of metal.

I wonder where it will end though? This constant pursuit of top-end performance. Performance that even the most adventurous of drivers would perhaps only use a tiny fraction of during their ownership – and many wouldn’t utilize at all!

What is the best Corvette?

Well that depends on how much money you are willing to spend! I will give you my opinion though. The ‘best’ Corvette to own, right now, is the 2020 Corvette Stingray. It has a top speed of 194 mph and it will propel you to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds.

Do you want to know what the best thing is about the 2020 Corvette though? It’s the price! The Corvette Stingray (Coupe) starts from a ridiculously low $59,995. Okay, I know this may still sound like quite a lot of money but for a high-performance car, it’s exceptional value.

However, this is of course, my opinion – yours might be totally different but I really don’t think it’s possible to get more bang for your buck!

If you’d like to take a look at configuring a 2020 Corvette Stingray, then take a look at Chevrolet’s configurator – start dreaming!

How Much Does It Cost To Buy A Corvette?

If you’ve read the above, then you certainly know how much it costs for a 2020 Corvette but there are many different types of ‘Vette that you can buy that was manufactured over many years. So the only true answer is that it could cost you anything from $100 to $150,000, depending on what you’re after!

Is a Corvette a Supercar?

Conclusion

It shouldn’t matter whether a car is classified as a ‘Supercar’ or not. However, of course it does actually matter. We all (well, perhaps that’s a generalization but the majority of us) dream about owning a supercar at some point in their life. A supercar must be a car that is difficult to achieve for the majority of us, otherwise it’s hardly inspirational.

Hopefully, you now understand that the Corvette can be a supercar but it depends on which one you are looking at. The ZR1 most definitely is a supercar, but most aren’t and many you would just describe as a ‘sports car’.

Since I've been able to walk I think I've had a preference to be sitting between four wheels instead of standing on my two legs! I've owned many different cars in my life. A 1964 purple Beach Buggy, 1967 VW Baja Bug, 1973 V8 Land Rover, an S1 Lotus Elise, an S2 Lotus Elise and an S2 Lotus Elise Sport 190. A Porsche Boxster 3.5S and now a Lamborghini Gallardo. I've learned a lot in this time and this site is my outlet to share everything I know about my favorite subject...SUPERCARS!
